Breaking all stereotypes surrounding an Indian wedding, two business families in the city set a unique example on Sunday.

Priyadarshana Sabadra and Rushabh Gogad, who got married on April 19 with a simple register marriage at the court avoided unnecessary expenditure on lavish wedding events.

Instead, they threw a reception at Vishwas Lawns on Sunday and distributed helmets to over 500 guests.

Priyadarshana's father, Rajendra Sabhadra said, "The concept came to my mind after the city police's pro-helmet campaign. Everyone understands the necessity of using helmets, but we hardly go out and purchase one. So, we decided to gift ISI marked good quality helmets to all our guests in the hope that most of them will use it. Those who don't drive two-wheelers have the option to hand it over to the needy."

The concept was a great hit among all the guests who came to give their blessings to the newly married couple. Among the many guests who appreciated the concept was commissioner of police, Ravinder Kumar Singhal, who also presented the helmets to some of the guests.

"I saw several youths at the party who drive two-wheelers without headgear. Now, some of them will use the helmets. This is a unique way to spread awareness about the city traffic police's constant of promoting safe driving or riding among the citizens. Usually, we respect the gifts that are given to us by our near and dear ones. I hope that more people will make use of this ideal gift," said Singhal.

Both, Priyadarshana and Rushabh were in complete support of their parent's decision. "My father's decision to gift helmets to all the guests is the biggest wedding gift I could have asked for," said Priyadarshana.

Safe driving was not the only message that this new-age newly married couple tried to inculcate among their guests. "Both the families avoided printing invitation cards as part of a go-green initiative. The invitations were sent online and with the use of social media. Even for the reception function, the families kept Nashik grapes instead of sweets in the menu. The money saved through this has been donated to 'Apla Ghar', an NGO working for the rehabilitation of 350 kids who were adopted after the Bhuj earthquake," said event coordinator Kartik Bafna.
