A COAST couple's simple message during their wedding ceremony had the man of honour almost in tears.

When Alison and Andrew Jagoe got married in 2016 at Happy Valley in-front of 75 friends and family it was the happiest day of their lives.

But for one member of the wedding party, Mrs Jagoe's brother Bayden, having a special day like his sister's remains illegal in Australia.

The pair requested their celebrant add a special message to the monitum, required by law to be said during the wedding ceremony, which states "marriage, according to law in Australia, is the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life".

The short statement in support of marriage equality, that the bride and groom look forward to the day everybody has the right to marry, had an important reason for inclusion on the couple's big day.

"My maid of honour was my brother who is gay," said Mrs Jagoe.

"That was actually a little surprise for him, he didn't know that was in the ceremony.

"He absolutely loved it, he really appreciated that."

Their celebrant Fiona Duce previously told the Daily about 50 to 75% of her clients choose to add a similar message to their ceremonies.

Mrs Jagoe described her brother as her best friend and said he was extremely supportive of the wedding and looks forward to one day having his own.

"He's not overly emotional, but he said that was the closest part of the ceremony he got to tears," she said.

"It was definitely his favourite part of the wedding."

As for the upcoming postal plebiscite, Mrs Jagoe said she would definitely be voting in support of marriage equality and questioned why it wasn't already legalised.

"I'm not extremely political... I just think it's ridiculous we're even having a postal vote for this," she said.

"It should just be an easy no-brainer I think.

"I just think everyone should be able to get married."
